What a Special Gift

What is one of the most common skills of the average reading speed in the U.S. is 210 to 250 words per minute (wpm). As a comparison, John F. Kennedy read at 2,500 wpm and Evelyn Woods at 3,900 wpm with 90% comprehension. Teddy Roosevelt was known to read two books per day and seven newspapers every morning.

Other gifted (fast) readers include Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Bill Gates. Most gifted readers have learned to read before entering school (learning is most effective before the age of 3), are left-handed, and excel in music, usually the violin or piano.

Following are some very sad statistics about reading in the United States:

  1. Over half of all U.S. adults cannot read.

  2. 52% of the U.S. population do not read at all after college and the other 48% average reading only 10 books per year.

  3. 85% of juvenile offenders have reading problems.

  4. 75% of the unemployed cannot read well.

Wouldn’t you agree that knowledge is the power required to change? Wouldn’t you also agree that the global view of life emphasizes change to a great degree? Reading is by far one of the best means of achieving the knowledge needed to cope with massive daily changes.

This holiday season, perhaps your gift list should include books, or maybe even the gift of teaching someone else to read. You will be giving the gift of future success.
