Holiday
Tips
Catch the holiday spirit. Keep holiday music playing while you’re decorating and/or cleaning – Go to the mall and watch the kids visiting Santa Claus – Take a walk or drive to look at all the lights – Reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Ho, Ho, Ho. If your holiday gift opening becomes hectic, have a big shopping bag with the name of each child written on it so as soon as they have opened their gift, it goes straight into the bag (and not thrown away with the wrappings). Revise holiday expectations. It seems that long-term expectations for the ‘good ole days’ are never realized and we anticipate much more than can be. Maybe our expectations need to be revised so that we discover what is especially important, concentrate on those ideas, and let the rest go. Start a new tradition. Some traditions are maintained simply because they have existed forever and others because we really enjoy them. One idea is to form a new (and perhaps discard an old) holiday tradition each year. Perhaps trying a new recipe each year or giving more of ourselves in time. Good traditions are heartily enjoyed by all involved and can be accomplished with joy. Bad traditions are generally excessively costly and energy-consuming. Do you have the right amount of lights on your tree? To figure the minimum amount you need, simply multiply the tree’s width by eight, then multiply that figure by the tree’s height. For example, if you have a 4-foot wide tree that is 7 feet tall, you would want 224 lights (4x8 = 32x7 = 224). Sticky tags a bother? Soak the label with hot vinegar or salad oil, or use WD-40 and/or a single-edge razor blade or a stiff brush (test first, some surfaces may be harmed). Wait until later. Not everything has to be done during the actual holiday season. Baking, entertaining, and some gift giving is a welcome lift to after holiday blues and the winter days ahead. |
