10
Commandments for Connecting
1. Prepare. Meet people with a strong handshake and smile. Make sure that you introduce yourself and begin by asking questions. 2. Attend. It’s impossible to network/connect if you’re sitting at home on the couch thinking about it. Go to as many networking functions as your energy can handle. 3. Try strategies that feel comfortable to you. Make eye contact. Appear approachable. Go with someone, but split up. Listen. Circulate gracefully. 4. Say something–anything. Be the initiator. Listen with sincere interest and respond. 5. Mind your manners. Acknowledge and treat everyone equally and nicely. 6. Avoid the common crutches. Don’t arrive late. Don’t drink too much (or at all). Don’t gorge yourself. 7. Remember the three E’s. Effort, Energy, Enthusiasm. 8. Dress appropriately. If you are unsure, ask. 9. Remember the four C’s. Courtesy, Caring, Charm, Chutzpah. 10. Bring your sense of humor. But, be sure it is appropriate, timely, and tasteful. Adapted from How to Work a Room By Susan Roane |
